Insurance Coverage and Tax Deductions

Most clients are pleased to discover they have coverage for a psychologist through their extended medical plans. Your insurer may ask if the psychologist is registered. All psychologists at gmPsychologists are registered and have doctorates.

All our psychologists are listed as service providers with Blue Cross and other selected agencies.

Note that any fees not paid by medical insurance are tax-deductible as medical expenses.

Fees for private psychological services are not covered by MSI.

We Recommend Calling Your Insurance Company Before Booking with a Psychologist

Using the information on the insurance card you carry in your wallet, call your company and provide the policy number and your ID number.

Ask your insurer

  • Does my plan cover the services of a Registered Psychologist?
  • How much coverage do I have per year?
  • Is that per calendar year or per 12-month period?
  • Do you cover 100% of the amount or do I have to pay a portion of each visit?
  • Is there a deductible amount, which I have to pay before I qualify for reimbursement?
  • Do I require a physician’s referral to qualify for my insurance coverage?
  • How do I submit my claim for reimbursement?

Almost all insurance companies require that clients pay for services directly and submit their receipts to their insurers for reimbursement.  gmPsychologists provides receipts that are suitable for reimbursement by all insurers.  Receipts for services of a psychologist are income-tax-deductible as health-care expenses so please keep your receipts for your tax records.

Fees may be paid with cash, debit cards, VISA or MasterCard. We do not accept personal cheques.

Fees for Individual Therapy

Currently, individual therapy is $200 per hour.

Payments are made at our Reception desk prior to your session so we encourage you to arrive a little bit early for your appointment.

Fees for Couples’ or Family Counselling

A couple or a family is booked for a two-hour appointment for the first appointment. After the first one, we usually book one-hour appointments once per week.

Currently, the fee for couples’ or family counselling is $215 per hour.

Some couples prefer longer appointments, while others prefer shorter. We are flexible in this, and your psychologist will discuss the most appropriate arrangement for you.

Fees for Missed Appointments or Appointments Canceled Without Sufficient Notice

In fairness to our psychologists, whose time is wasted when clients do not keep their appointments, and to clients on our waiting lists, we require 48 business-hours’ notice for any cancellations or changes to be made without charge (regardless of the reason, whether it be illness, emergency or inclement weather). Monday appointments must be cancelled by noon on Thursday.

Fees for missed or late-cancelled appointments must be paid immediately in order to retain future, scheduled appointments. If we have your credit card on file, the charge will be automatic, and appointments will remain in our schedule. If we do not, please call to pay so that your appointments are not cancelled.

During bad-weather events, assume the office is open unless you hear otherwise from your psychologist.

Telephone Sessions

We encourage clients to call in advance to discuss potential problems with weather interfering with an appointment. We can accommodate in various ways and, sometimes, with individuals (not couples or families) we might suggest a telephone session.

We also encourage clients who suddenly become ill to participate in a telephone session rather than being charged for a missed appointment.

Telephone sessions are arranged by calling us at (902) 492-2546.

Receipts for Missed Appointments

Because of insurance requirements, receipts for missed appointments must say “missed appointment,” and these receipts are unlikely to be reimbursed by your insurer.

gmPsychologists cannot issue a receipt for “therapy” if the appointment has been missed.

Missed Appointments are Not Charged if the Following Occurs:

  1. If a state of emergency is declared by the city;
  2. If Dalhousie University closes;
  3. If there is an extended power outage in the city; or
  4. If city buses are not running.

Fees for Assessments

Assessment fees vary, depending upon the type.

Fees for Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychological assessment includes an interview, a full day of testing, a file review, the provision of a written report with recommendations, and a follow-up review with clients.  Please call for further information:  492-2546.

Fees for Legal Consultations

Once we are provided with the client file and letter of directives, our psychologists will be in a position to give an estimate of the time likely to be required for a complete assessment and report.  Please call for further information:  492-2546

Fees for Court

When our psychologists or staff are requested or subpoenaed to appear in Court, clients are responsible for the fee at the rate that is the legal fee at the time the request is made, plus costs. Changes or cancellations for time reserved are needed two weeks in advance.

The fee for time reserved but not used for Court is invoiced.
