Cognitive rehabilitation is a structured set of therapeutic activities designed to help a person learn (or relearn) ways to concentrate, remember, and solve problems after an illness or injury affecting the brain. Treatment is based on individualized goals that take into account a person’s post-injury strengths and weaknesses, usually based on the results of a neuropsychological assessment.
The goal of cognitive rehabilitation is to achieve the highest possible level of daily functioning and improved quality of life. Goals may be achieved through a variety of restorative or compensatory techniques and tools:
- repetition of auditory and/or visual attention tasks
- memory strategy training
- use of adaptive devices or aids to compensate for deficits
- adaptive approaches to targeted tasks
